A Case Study in Corporate Placemaking

Dupaco Community Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative with more than 144,000 member-owners. They have 20 locations throughout Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin.

THE CHALLENGE

Dupaco was moving their corporate headquarters to a 174,000 square foot, five-story building in the heart of downtown Dubuque in the Millwork District. The nearly 100-year-old building had all the space and character to support Dupaco’s growing membership. They wanted to focus the vacant space on the first level of the building to become a place that 1) would engage the community and 2) would support Dupaco’s values.

THE SOLUTION

Through a custom Innovation Works® recipe, Dupaco leveraged the collective knowledge and experience of 35 stakeholders in a virtual session to identify new ideas for making the street-level spaces an engaging, community space. Participants in the process included a diverse group of Dupaco team members & leadership, along with neighboring business owners, nonprofit leaders, developers and designers.

Through a game-based process, the teams focused on creating concepts for social spaces, workspaces, and art spaces. Teams ensured their ideas could be sustainable and would provide value to the neighborhood and for Dupaco Members. The top 2-3 ideas were identified and taken for refinement and implementation by the Dupaco team.

THE RESULTS

“This session helped stretch our team to create ideas and solutions for our building. These solutions will have a long-lasting, positive impact that will help us fulfill our mission.”
